Is change needed for the new year?
When it comes to new year resolution, identify what needs change is crucial for better self-growth. How do you determine whether something needs to be changed? The followings are some guidelines: –
- Are you happy with who you are now? This is the simplest form of identification. If you are happy, why do you want to change? We only change things that we are not satisfied with. There are many aspects you can consider on, i.e. health, wealth and relationship. Are you happy with your current body shape, your weight, your look? Are you happy with your current networth? Are you happy with your relationship with your friends, your spouse and your kid?
- Check the reason of your unhappiness. You don’t need to change if it is due to external factors. Somebody suggested you to change a car. You are wondering whether you should. This is not the reason you should change. Understand the real reason. For example, you are considering in changing your job. The reason shall be related to yourself, i.e. you cannot see personal growth or career development in your current job. If it is mainly due to your boss or your colleagues, these reasons are not solid. You should first try to check whether you can change departments than changing the job.
- When change is needed, it is better to identify what exactly needs to change. Let say, I want to have more money than last year because I want to buy a new home. This is vague. How much money is considered “more”? How long do you need to save RM x to buy a new home (consider how much you have currently?) What are the activities you need to do to have more money.
- Visualise the end goal / change, put it on the dream board. Having something in a written form will increase the probability of success in getting what you want. Spend few hours having the new yearly dream board.
